India Gate – ‘All India War Memorial’

India Gate

India Gate is an important place to visit in Delhi on your Delhi tour packages. India Gate takes its original name as the ‘All India War Memorial’, which was erected to commemorate the 82000 Indian Army soldiers who lost their lives during ‘World War I’ from the year 1914 to the year 1921 as well as the ‘Third Anglo-Afghan War’. The war memorial is located in Rajpath, where you can get to it by getting off at Barakhamba Road Metro station. India Gate is also known as one of the best places to visit in Delhi with friends in a one day tour of Delhi. India Gate is placed on the eastern edging of Delhi’s ceremonial axis and was formerly called the Kingsway. The names of around 13300 soldiers, including some soldiers and officers from the United Kingdom (UK), are depicted on the gate. The architecture of India Gate is world famous as the ‘Arch of Triumphal’, which looks like the Arch of Constantine and is also compared to the ‘Arc de Triomphe’ and the ‘Gateway of India’ which is located in Mumbai.

The designer of the monument was ‘Sir Edwin Lutyens’. After the Bangladesh Liberation War in the year 1971, there was a simple structure, including a black marble pedestal with an inverted rifle, covered by a war helmet and bordered by 4 eternal flames erected under the Memorial Archway. This was the Amar Jawan Jyoti or the flame of the immortal soldier. Construction of the India Gate began in the year 1921 and was completed after 10 years in the year 1931. The architectural dimensions of the structure say that it is 42 meters high and 9.1 meters broad. It was built from yellow and red sandstone along with granite. In the year 2014, the government announced plans to build a national war memorial around the canopy as well as a national war museum in the nearby park.

‘Republic Day Parade’ or ‘India Gate Parade’ is the most solemn and prestigious event that takes place in front of India Gate every year. Every year on 26th January, India commemorates the day when it became a republic in which many national and worthy guests from other countries were appreciated.
